Two AI philosophies
ATLAS.ti's AI is inductive and exploratory: point AI Coding at documents and it proposes an open-coding pass; Intentional AI Coding narrows that with your research questions. It is genuinely powerful for discovering themes — and its known failure mode is a project flooded with shallow codes that need cleanup (ATLAS.ti's own docs recommend reviewing and pruning).
Tagaroo's agent is deductive and schema-bound: it never invents a coding scheme, it applies the one you chose — a PHQ-9, a MITI fidelity manual, your own codebook — and each proposal carries the span, the severity anchor it matched, and a written rationale. Review-then-accept is the entire workflow, and agreement statistics measure the agent like any other rater.
Neither is 'better' in the abstract: exploratory theme discovery favors ATLAS.ti; instrument-driven annotation favors Tagaroo.

Direction. ATLAS.ti's AI proposes codes it derives from the text (inductive open coding). Tagaroo's agent applies the scheme you specify and justifies each annotation with a severity and rationale (deductive). If you already know your instrument, generation is noise; if you're exploring, it's the point.
Which computes better inter-rater reliability?
Different strengths. ATLAS.ti's ICA tool is methodologically serious about Krippendorff's alpha for 2+ coders but deliberately omits Cohen's kappa.
